Ibiza - the white isle

All Ibiza

The cosmopolitan flair of Ibiza has always been a main attraction to the discerning, luxury-seeking traveller. Michelin star restaurants, some of the world’s most incredible beaches, stunning marinas, turquoise waters, the mild climate and a world famous nightlife scene make Ibiza one of the most coverted travel destinations.

An alternative crowd has been coming to ibiza since the 1920s and the island continues to entices this mix of bohemian and jet-set cosmopolitan crowds. The world’s most famous DJs, pop-stars, supermodels, sports personalities and Hollywood stars all come for a reason, Ibiza is simply one of the world’s ultimate playgrounds with equal measures of ‘detox’ and ‘retox’.

HISTORY

More than 3000 years ago the first people settled in Ibiza. In 654BC the Carthaginians discovered the islands of Ibiza and Formentera, naming them ‘Pitiusas’, meaning the ‘Pine-covered islands’. The Romans invaded in 123BC naming the island Ebusus. You can still see the roman gates at the entrance to Dalt Vila and bridge to Santa Eulalia town has been restored from the original bridge laid by the Romans.

The island continued to be invaded, taken over by The Barbarians (known today as The English), then the Arabs, who stayed for nearly 500 years. In 1235 the Catalans from the Spanish mainland arrived, destroying the Arabic mosque and building the Cathedral on its foundations, which still stands today. However, the island’s location, and trade ships attracted pirates, so during the 16th century, the Catalans constructed the iconic fortified walls and towers of Dalt Vila, now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Remaining a part of Spain, Ibiza became the third largest Spanish Balearic Island.

When the Spanish tourism industry exploded in the 1960s and 1970s, Ibiza became a haven for a bohemian crowd, alongside the rich and famous craving the wild, hedonistic freedom the island promised. Ibiza started to build its reputation as the holy-land for party people.

A more recent local drive for excellence has seen Ibiza evolve year-on-year, creating a sophisticated luxury destination. Just 210km of stunning coastline encompass a combination of stunning natural beauty, stunning marinas and world-famous nightlife, which attracts the hedonists, families and wellness-seekers alike.

CLIMATE & SEASONS

Ibiza boasts 210km of crystal clear coastline, Mediterranean temperatures and bright sunshine almost all year around. From March the spring begins and temperatures start to rise with warm sunny days. For those that prefer to enjoy the island when its less busy, March and April are a perfect time to enjoy its beauty. From May temperatures start to rise and the island starts to bustle with visitors. The sea and pools become a focal point for visitors and the temperatures continue to rise until August, hitting 30°C and higher when the island is at its most busy. September sees the notorious club closing parties with the island simmering down into October. November, December, January and February are quiet with locals and visitors enjoying mild winters with daytime temperatures dropping to around 15°C, a combination of cosy rainy days by the fire and warmer days strolling along quiet beaches.
