With so many affluent visitors arriving in Ibiza, you’d expect the wine selection available on the island to be extensive and exciting – and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. Alongside a fabulous range of imported vintages, there’s a long-established and very accomplished tradition of winemaking in Ibiza.
One of the many joys of a Mediterranean break is the opportunity to savour local wines, to discover new vineyards and to sample their wares in the same sunshine that ripened the grapes. Archaeologists have confirmed that wine was made here as far back as the Phoenician period, so at least since 600BC.
There are some 60-hectares of vines on Ibiza, nestled in the protected inland valleys, with some production in Formentera too. Both areas have a ‘Vi de la Terra’ label to help identify their origin and quality. The soil in Ibiza is ideally suited to grapes of a Mourvedre type, producing a very well-finished, full-bodied red wine. White wine is produced on the island too, with more diversity of grape varieties and distinctive, fragrant local character.
Can Rich de Buscastell is one of the best-established vineyards, growing both traditional and imported grape varieties to ensure they blend from their production each year with flavour and finish in mind. The vineyard also harvests the fruit from its 3,000 olive trees that grow within the Ses Salines natural park, and has added the most delicious olive oils to its range. Production at Can Rich is managed with ecological partnership principles at the fore. The growers work to protect and enhance the soil and the local wildlife, working in harmony with nature and making the most of the fabulous growing conditions in the area. It’s possible to pick up Can Rich wines and their Hierbas liqueur in local shops, but the vineyard welcomes visitors for tours and tastings.
Can Maymó is located in San Mateo, in the rural central north of Ibiza, and in prime vine countryside. This small and traditional, family-run vineyard has been refurbished and updated incorporating the latest technologies to enhance their wine-making process. Visitors are welcome by arrangement, with the family keen to show off their broad range of wines which include reds, whites and rosé.
In the centre of the island, between San Rafael and Santa Gertrudis we find Ibizkus wines. Taking grapes from some 30 different growing locations on the island, this company is now one of the largest producers, with their wine readily available in restaurants and shops. Winery tours and tastings are available by appointment through Cactus.
There are few island residents who know more about Spanish wine than Jeroen Hamersma. He and his family have created a veritable emporium of wine outside San Josep. Vino & Co is a simple concept, but with a vast range of wines. Stocks range from the very affordable to the very exclusive, but there’s always a large selection uncorked and ready to taste. A recent addition is a bar and a kitchen allowing the family to offer a tailored, wine-centred gastronomic experience too.
